Description

Early childhood care and education is no small matter. Statewide, 54% of households are located in a child care desert. The annual child care costs throughout Wisconsin for an infant are greater than annual tuition at an in-state public 4-year university. In Manitowoc County, the minimum monthly cost of child care for a family with an infant and toddler is $1,079 a month and $12,948 a year (2020 ALICE Report). A historical low in child care employees is crippling the workforce. Early childhood care and education is no small matter. Join United Way Manitowoc County on Tuesday, August 24 at 5:30pm at the UWGB campus to take a deeper look into the issue and view No Small Matter - the first feature film documentary to explore the most overlooked, underestimated and powerful force for good today: early childhood care and education. Through poignant stories and surprising humor, viewers will learn more about the power of high quality early childhood care and education, the importance of the first five years of life, and how failure to act results in an everyday crisis for families and a slow-motion catastrophe for America’s social and economic well-being. Following the documentary screening, a panel of caregivers, educators, parents and advocates will dive further into the topic on a local and state level. There will be time for Q & A from the audience. This event is perfect for business leaders, local and state government officials, schools, parents/caregivers, nonprofits, libraries and early childhood care providers. Some themes touched discussed in the film include: •The early education workforce, including compensation, turnover, and training •Return on investment – our economy, criminal justice reform, and our future workforce •Brain science and executive functioning •High quality teaching in early education settings •Children’s health and toxic stress www.unitedwaymanitowoccounty.org
