Description

This is a course on the fundamentals of music. It provides an introduction to music notation and theory, including staff notation, rhythmic notation, intervals, scales, chord construction, sight-reading and ear training. The skills you develop in this class can prepare you for learning how to sing or play a musical instrument. Along the way you will gain insights into how music works. The piano keyboard is used as an instructional tool, but it is not a focus of the class. Who should take this class? Anyone who likes music but has little or no musical background. It's a college-level class for which prior knowledge of music is not required. People who are returning to music after an absence have used the class as a review. The class meets online Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 12:25pm--but it's for a semester, not 14 days. The class is offered by City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and is free to residents of the City, otherwise $46 per unit for a 3-unit class. The instructor is Dr. Harry Bernstein. Music 100 (CRN 72099, section 002). The College website is at ccsf.edu. Inquiries about the class are welcome. None of the music classes are being taught at the College in person this Fall. It is hoped that this may change in the Spring.
