RAMAPO, NY — Ramapo police were pleased to receive a visit Monday from Moira Colley of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to thank Officer Christopher Byrnes and the department for his intrepid response to a raccoon trapped in a can.
"Without the persistence of Officer Byrnes, this terrified raccoon could have endured a slow, miserable death," said PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien. "PETA hopes this story inspires others to give animals in need a helping hand."
Responding to a homeowner's call about the panicked animal July 25, it took Byrnes several unorthodox tries to remove the can, and the raccoon scurried off into the woods, unharmed.
"As you can see, the can was really stuck!" Ramapo police said on Facebook.
O'Brien stated, "PETA hopes this story inspires others to give animals in need a helping hand."
