HARLEM, NY — After being forced to go virtual for the first time last year, Harlem Week is making a grand return this summer with a packed schedule of food, music, movie screenings and much more. The annual event kicks off on Friday, Aug. 6, and runs through Aug. 15. Some events will remain virtual, a nod to those who still wish to avoid in-person programming. Harlem Week began in 1974 as a single-day event designed to boost spirits in the neighborhood. In the ensuing 47 years, it has grown into an "international festival" lasting more than a week, organizers said. A full schedule of events can be found on the Harlem Week website. But here are a few highlights: Aug. 7: 3-6 p.m.: Great Jazz on the Great Hill: the popular event is back in Central Park, on the hill near 106th Street and Central Park West. Organized by Jazzmobile, performers will include Allan Harris, Camille Thurman and the Darrel Green Quartet, and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band — emceed by Alyson Williams. Aug. 7-15: Harlem 5K Run: Harlemites can run this race virtually, or in-person on Aug. 14 at 8 a.m. in honor of the late mayor and Harlemite David Dinkins. Aug. 12: 4-10 p.m.: Uptown Night Market: This eagerly awaited market will finally debut as part of Harlem week after being rained out last month. Featuring 50 food, beverage, merchandise and art vendors, it will be held under the Riverside Drive viaduct on 12th Avenue at West 135th Street. (See previous coverage) Read the full schedule here.
