STAMFORD, CT — After a yearlong closure due to COVID-19, the Stamford Senior Center reopened last month, much to the delight of seniors who rely on the facility and its resources. A grand reopening was held at the center, which is located on the second floor of Stamford's Government Center at 888 Washington Blvd. "We are thrilled to have the center open again, providing a safe space for seniors to rejoin their peers. During the pandemic we understood that many seniors experienced prolonged social isolation, so we took steps to keep them connected and cared for. It feels great to be able to do that again in person," said Christina Crain, Stamford Senior Center Executive Director, in a news release. Throughout the pandemic, the senior center delivered prepared meals and groceries to seniors who needed them. Programs were moved online, and drive-through events were held in order to help alleviate the loneliness and the negative health effects that resulted from the pandemic. While the center was closed, the cafe was remodeled, and new flooring and furniture were installed, according to a news release. "I'd rather be at the Senior Center than anywhere else. It is the most peaceful , safe and welcoming place and I'm so happy to be back," said Stamford Senior Center member Hilda Woodson in a news release. The center is requiring all attendees to be vaccinated. Services and programs will follow social distancing guidelines, and fitness classes and other learning opportunities are available both online and in-person indoors and outdoors. "The Center has come to life again with friendship and laughter. We're ecstatic to welcome our members back while remaining committed to keeping them healthy and safe," Crain added. The Stamford Senior Center offers affordable, life enhancing opportunities and essential support for its nearly 900 members. Through a wide array of active and engaging programming, older adults in the greater Stamford area can be active and healthy in mind and body, while remaining connected to their community in a welcoming, safe and diverse environment.
