Today is Wednesday, August 4, 2021 and I'll tell you about these top stories: an armed robbery resulted in a shelter in place order for CCU, DHEC released sobering COVID-19 numbers, a pedestrian was killed on Kings Highway, Longs residents get new mailboxes, and a popular helicopter ride company may have to move its operation. First, how about a glance at today's weather: Occasional rain showers continue. High: 80 Low: 70. Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today: An armed robbery at Tanger Outlets on Factory Stores Boulevard caused authorities to issue a brief shelter in place order at nearby Coastal Carolina University on Monday evening. Police pulled over the robbers as they were getting away in a reportedly stolen car. Then, the suspects exited the car and fled on foot. Two juvenile suspects were taken into custody, and four remaining suspects are still wanted. (WMBF) South Carolina DHEC released new daily COVID-19 case numbers Tuesday, showing 1,651 new cases statewide. Horry County continues to be a hotspot with 171 new confirmed cases, flagging the county as second in the state for highest new case numbers. 94% of Horry County's hospital beds are occupied. (WBTW) Police in Myrtle Beach are investigating a deadly pedestrian crash that happened on Kings Highway Monday night. The incident happened at 70th Avenue North, and a Pennsylvania woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The roadways were closed while police investigated. (WMBF) Over a month after a 2-alarm fire destroyed the Longs post office, residents can finally pick up their mail at the location instead of driving to North Myrtle Beach. An air-conditioned truck for customer service, and some temporary mailboxes have been set up at the facility. The driveway to the building is now open. (WPDE) The popular Myrtle Beach attraction, Helicopter Adventures located on 21st Avenue North, may have to move by 2024, after the county filed an injunction against the business and landowners Burroughs and Chapin. The injunction stems from residents complaining about the noise from take-offs and fly-overs of the choppers, and cites a 2016 ordinance that requires the aircraft to use heliports or helipads at public-use airports only.
