PALM DESERT, CA — An eight-hour-long DUI checkpoint held over the weekend in Palm Desert netted two arrests and four citations. The operation that was operated by sheriff's deputies and funded by federal dollars took place at Cook Street and Country Club Drive from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday. During the checkpoint, one driver was arrested for DUI, four drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, and one driver was arrested for a felony warrant, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. A total of 745 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 236 motorists were screened for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs/medications, the department reported. Drivers arrested for driving under the influence of drugs/medications or alcohol can spend time in jail and pay up to $13,500, including fines, fees, classes, license suspensions and other expenses, according to the sheriff's department. "Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests," the sheriff's department said. "The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired." Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
