SOUTHWESTERN PA — The latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that one county in the region has joined just three others in Pennsylvania in reporting high community spread of the coronavirus. Armstrong County, north of Pittsburgh, has the high rate of community spread. It joins Crawford, Warren and McKean County, all in northwestern Pennsylvania, as the only four among the state's 67 counties with a high rate. The latest weekly community spread rates for counties cover the period from July 25 through Aug. 1. The CDC recommends that people wear masks indoors, even if they are fully vaccinated, if they are in areas with substantial or high coronavirus transmission. That includes almost two-thirds of all counties in the country. The CDC and other health organizations have emphasized that the way to slow community transmission of the virus is for people to get vaccinated against it. According to the CDC, 63 percent of Armstrong County adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine. That's below the national average of 69.9 percent.
