Rideshare Robbery Reports
The Atlanta Police Department (APD) wants ride-share drivers to be aware of a series of incidents where drivers have been victimized by criminals who pose as "riders". These persons call for a ride from one of the known ride-share companies, but actually have sinister motives. In these cases, the drivers arrive to pick up the alleged rider, and somehow get duped into getting out of their cars for one reason or another, only to find themselves being carjacked or having their car and valuables stolen by perpetrators who work together to pull off the crime. APD tells drivers to be mindful of their surroundings and to leave immediately if the rider you are going to pick up, tries to get you to step out of your car.
Captain Peter Malecki, of APD's Major Crimes Unit, provides a break down here on how it happens, and advises how to keep safe and maintain situational awareness while working. APD wants all drivers and all people in our communities to be safe. If anyone has any information on these crimes call us. If you see something suspicious or know of other criminal activity-call 911 or Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Your call to Crime Stoppers will be anonymous and you may be entitled to a reward. Warning to the criminals involved in these schemes…you are on our radar, expect that we will find you and arrest you.
