Utility Person Salary $25.35 - $31.77 per hour To apply online: (MULTIPLE%20OPENINGS) Job Summary The Utility Person position performs manual labor and operates equipment for maintenance or construction of the City water, sewer, streets, and drainage systems. Current position openings will be assigned to work in one of the operations and maintenance divisions of the Public Works Department. Position Highlights: • Performs work site activities regarding street maintenance, traffic control (signs and signals) and vegetation control such as temporary and permanent asphalt patching and concrete work. • Performs work site activities regarding sewer maintenance including mains, pumping stations, and appurtenances such as repairing and cleaning mains, troubleshooting pump problems at lift station and safety observer. • Performs work site activities regarding water system maintenance of mains, valves, hydrants, meters, PRVs and appurtenances such as reading meters, repair hydrants, install and services mains. • Performs work site, activities regarding storm drain maintenance including mains, catch basins, detention/retention facilities and channelization. • Acts as flag person to control traffic while road work is being accomplished. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power-driven tools. • Ability to operate equipment such as five-yard dump truck, backhoe as a loader and concrete mixer among others. • Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing. • Ability to meet with the public and communicate effectively with citizens. • Ability to read blueprints and engineering plans. Minimum Qualifications Must have a high school diploma (or GED) and minimum of one-year utility construction experience. Good working knowledge of common hand and power tools is required. Must have and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License. Possess and maintain current Class A Combination Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements or must obtain within 12 months of date of hire, note: testing and licensing fees at own expense. Must obtain and maintain certified flagging card within six months of date of hire. Preferred Qualifications • A current, valid Class A CDL with air and tanker endorsements • Public Works municipal experience • Drinking water distribution system operation and maintenance experience • Storm water drainage systems experience Working Conditions Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be in good physical condition and be able to climb in and out of trenches, vaults, manholes, excavation, and construction equipment. Must be able to lift and move heavy (50 lbs. plus) and bulky objects. Union Affiliation This position is represented by Teamsters Local 763 Union. Following a conditional offer of employment, prospective employees may be tested for the presence of drugs as part of the pre-employment drug screening. Testing for this position will include both a written test and a hands-on skills test.
