In the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, Mercedes-Benz had more pressing matters to attend to than achieving success on the racetrack. Within ten short years, this would all change. Despite almost impossible odds, Mercedes would find themselves alone at the top of the racing world, and then, in the very same year, self-exiled from it. How did this come to be and why did Mercedes leave the sport for almost 20 years?
