Here are the top stories today in Beaverton: Former Beaverton resident and two-time Olympian Julius Achon was recognized recently with an Olympians For Life award. Achon ran the 1500 meter event in Atlanta (1996) and in Sydney (2000). He's one of just five Olympians inducted by the World Olympians Association. (KGW.com)Washington County was the only county in Oregon to receive a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help improve trust and health literacy for people of color, with a special focus on the Latinx community. The county is partnering with Adelante Mujeres, Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and Familias en Acción to increase health education, support COVID-19 vaccination efforts and other efforts to counter the virus among underserved populations. (Pamplin Media Group) American record holder and 2017 world silver medalist Courtney Frerichs is headed to the steeplechase finals in Tokyo. The runner will compete for a medal on August 4. Frerichs trains with Nike's prestigious Bowerman TC in Beaverton. (USA Track and Field) Portland Business Journal offers a list of the largest commercial developers in the Portland Metro Area, among which is Beaverton's Pacific NW Properties. The development company has completed 1.38 million square feet of development over the past five years, including business parks in South Salem and Vancouver. The company ranks third in the region for square feet developed behind Trammel Crow and Sprecht Development. (Portland Business Journal) Four new classrooms are coming to Vose Elementary next summer. The upgrade is in response to an increase in staffing for higher-poverty schools like Vose, allowing the school to reduce class size.
