CLEVELAND — The loss of a contract and the end of national operations resulted in two companies announcing layoffs in Ohio in July, according to filings with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. Ohio law requires companies planning mass layoffs or plant closings to announce those actions 60 days in advance. The announcements are then shared by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. In July, TTEC Home and Compass Group USA both announced layoffs impacting Ohio workers. Compass Group lost its contract with Cleveland State University, prompting the company to layoff 72 employees. The layoffs will begin on approximately Sept. 7. TTEC Home is ceasing its operations nationwide. The company's shuttering meant six Ohioans lost their jobs in July. Unemployment data for July has not yet been released by the state, but Ohio's unemployment rate climbed to 5.2 percent in June, up from 5 percent in May. That means 291,000 Ohioans were looking for work in June, up from 278,000 in May.
