About the Instructor: Lila Ferber is a sculptor, painter, and exhibit fabricator from Omaha, Nebraska. In Portland, she studies ice carving and is teaching woodturning classes on the lathe. She creates abstract, playful wood carvings and oil paintings with bright colors and organic forms. Her work is made from wood, stone, and foam, which she stacks together into interactive, abstract sculptures. “Balance is a key element, as each individual piece relies on the others for support in a visually precarious yet structurally sound manner.” Lila joined Past Lives LLC in May 2021, motivated by being “part of a community where people are working until midnight.” She hopes to expand her woodturning business by offering classes on the lathe, which she has been teaching on for almost three years now. “I love teaching, especially kids; they bring a level of unpredictability and imagination to sculpting.” Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally, including New York, DC, Portland, and Pheonix. She interned with the Salem Art Works Sculpture Park in New York, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the exhibit fabrication department at the Omaha Children’s Museum, and the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in the marble quarries of Vermont. In the future, Lila wants to build sculptural playground exhibitions for kids to interact with and climb on in a park. When she’s not creating art, she’s playing music on her piano, piccolo, or purple ukulele or taking inspiration from the outdoors. Past Lives LLC is a community of artists, hobbyists, and beginning business owners dedicated to creating employment and mentorship opportunities for ex-convicts and anyone else overcoming trauma or from marginalized backgrounds. Our makerspace is shared by dozens of Portland-based artists from a variety of creative disciplines including woodworking, metalsmithing, glassworking, painting, drawing, sewing, and just about any other creative endeavor you can imagine. Some of our members are offering workshops where guests will have the opportunity to learn new creative skills and equipment as instructed by experts, tour the makerspace, and leave with handmade artwork of their own!
