Description

When the topic turns to forests in California, it seems that all we hear about is fire these days! But even in the footprint of the largest single fire in California’s history, there are important stories about forest management and the critical role it plays not only in managing fire behavior, but also in bolstering communities, protecting our water, providing space to recreate, and creating ecosystems resilient to all types of disturbance. The 2021 Cal SAF Summer Meeting will welcome members to the community of Shaver Lake to see how good forest management impacted the Creek Fire as it burned across the largest area in California history for a non-complex fire. This field-based meeting will tour members through the greater Shaver Lake Area to view forest management activities that played a critical role in altering fire behavior on the Creek fire across Federal, State, Private and NGO land. During the tour, members will have the opportunity to: • Hear about the ways in which collaboration allowed for management across landscapes; • View different forest management activities and see how they impacted fire behavior; • View current activities in which area foresters are engaging to being moving forward from the devastation caused by the fire (salvage logging, site preparation, reforestation, prescribed burning, erosion control); • Hear about the research and demonstration efforts surrounding forest management’s impacts on fire behavior. www.californiasaf.org The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the United States. SAF is a nonprofit organization meeting the requirements of 501 (c) (3). SAF members include natural resource professionals in public and private settings, researchers, CEOs, administrators, educators, and students.
