WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw the biggest weekly increase in coronavirus cases since early June, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,339 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with eight more new cases in the last week. For each of the two previous weeks, Western Springs saw five new cases. That follows four weeks when the total case number did not budge. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 83.3 in Darien, 89.3 in La Grange Park, 93 in DuPage County, 94.2 in Hinsdale, 95.6 in Elmhurst, 102.6 in Clarendon Hills, 103.4 in suburban Cook County, 106.2 in Burr Ridge and 122.9 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,419,611, up 0.9 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 23,440. Nationally, 34.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 1.6 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 610,873 people have died from the virus in the United States.
