Make woodburning art on a set of 4 live-edge coasters with Melissa. Great for personal use and gifts! Any skill level welcome. In this two-hour workshop, you will learn about the tools, techniques, and strategies needed to create beautiful woodburning art. We will be making a set of 4 live-edge coasters, which are great for personal use and work as lovely gifts! This class is for anyone- beginners and experienced artists welcome. Step-by-step instruction, design templates, and all woodburning tools will be supplied. Personal designs, unique details, and hand-drawn images are also welcome! We will meet in the Past Lives LLC/ADX creative workspace in the heart of Portland's Central Eastside. Melissa will introduce you to all the tools and techniques used at the woodburning station during a half-hour practice session. The remainder of the time will be for you to practice your new skills by burning the design of your choice onto the coasters. Melissa will be available to assist with any questions. Become a Pyrographer! You will leave the workshop with a 4-piece coaster set of your own, woodburned by you! You should be proud! Additional take-home woodburning kits will be available for purchase after the experience to continue your creations at home. Optional kit includes: Walnut Hollow Creative Woodburner tool with 4 interchangeable tips, a sheet of reusable carbon paper, a pencil, an eraser, 3 design templates handmade by Melissa Romeo, a sheet of sandpaper, one live-edge wood round. Cost: $45  Come Prepared Workshop capacity: up to 10 guests Ages 12+ *Per Past Lives LLC policy, youth ages 16-17 may attend after legal guardian has met with staff and signed a liability waiver. Youth ages 10-15 must also have a legal guardian sign a liability waiver and must be accompanied by an adult. Seated workshop, masks required indoors, six feet apart per household Guests do not need to bring any additional materials, however, personal designs are welcome to use as templates! Past Lives LLC and ADX share this workspace where artists will be actively creating around you during the workshop. It may get noisy! About the Instructor Melissa Romeo is an artist and arts educator living in Portland, OR. After stumbling upon a hobby woodburner while cleaning out her parent's house, she quickly turned from painting and drawing on canvas and paper to writing with fire on wood. Melissa now has over 7 years of woodburning experience and loves to make highly detailed line work burnings inspired by the human body and nature. Feel free to check out her work on her Instagram @madelike_this.  Past Lives LLC is a community of artists, hobbyists, and beginning business owners dedicated to creating employment and mentorship opportunities for ex-convicts and anyone else overcoming trauma or from marginalized backgrounds. Our makerspace is shared by dozens of Portland-based artists from a variety of creative disciplines including woodworking, metalsmithing, glassworking, painting, drawing, sewing, and just about any other creative endeavor you can imagine. Some of our members are offering workshops where guests will have the opportunity to learn new creative skills and equipment as instructed by experts, tour the makerspace, and leave with handmade artwork of their own!
