BEVERLY, MA — Beverly police are kicking off ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Month by bringing back some old gear in honor of the cause. Beverly police are selling their BPD-themed ALS hats, T-shirts and sweatshirts with proceeds to benefit ALS research and the Beverly Police Benevolent Association in honor of late Beverly native Pete Frates. "On our BPD-ALS gear is our hometown and national hero Pete Frates who was a friend and teammate," Beverly police said. "Pete's family is still instrumental in the ALS community." All items will be shipped directly to the purchaser. Items can be ordered here. On Friday, Julie Frates, Pete's widow, was to participate in a large public Ice Bucket Challenge in the Seaport area of Boston. Last month, it was 7-year-old Lucy Frates —daughter of the former Boston College player and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge founder — who stole the show with her first pitch at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox honored the Frates family as part of their Lou Gehrig ALS Night ceremony. The Red Sox were in Houston when ballparks across Major League Baseball held Lou Gehrig Day events in honor of the "Iron Horse" who died of the same multisystem neurodegenerative disorder that claimed Frates in 2019 after a courageous seven-year battle. Nancy Frates, the Beverly mother of Pete Frates, narrated the official Major League Baseball Network tribute video shown throughout the day on the MLB Network and at Yankee Stadium in honor of Gehrig. In 2014, Pete Frates helped launch the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which is credited with raising awareness of the disease and more than $200 million for ALS research as of 2019.— Did you find this article useful?
