Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: Students returning to classrooms, and their parents, have a myriad of new rules and guidelines to understand around COVID protocols. KCRA rounds them all up for you for the Sacramento City Unified School District. (KCRA3)Four local high school football programs are facing sanctions after violating COVID rules last year. The football programs for Capital Christian High School, Ripon Christian High School, Stone Ridge Christian High School and Vacaville Christian High School have been placed on probation for the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. (FOX40)Another local Olympian is doing us proud. El Dorado Hills' Bryce Mefford finished just shy of a medal, in fourth place in the 200m backstroke finals in Tokyo. Mefford came into Tokyo ranked fifth in the world for the event he competed in. Friends of Mefford showed their support Wednesday evening at a watch party in Carmichael at the swim club where his mother is the coach. (KCRA3)As part of its "Life Looks Good on You" water safety campaign, the Sacramento County Department of Regional Parks is having a mural painted on the bathrooms at the Sunrise recreation area. The mural will be a pretty reminder to wear your life jackets and be safe at local waterways. The mural will be completed at noon today, so go check it out! (Saccounty.net) You know about the cooling centers that the city opens when it gets scorching hot, but did you know there are also cleaner-air centers that are ready to go if the air quality from the surrounding fires triggers it? The cleaner-air centers will be staged in various community centers across the city, chosen strategically to meet the needs of all residents. They will be activated under protocols from the Wildfire Smoke Response Plan, which was created following the 2018 Camp Fire. Should the air become hazardous, the City's Office of Emergency Management also will work with community partners to distribute N95 masks to essential workers and unsheltered residents. (Sacramento City Express) Saturday's events in Sacramento Listen to a panel discussion by the Google X team that built the world's largest energy kite. From the inspiration of their kite surfing days this team built a rigid wing energy-producing kite and a business. Hear their journey at the Aerospace Museum of California. (11 am)Come out and celebrate Liberian Independence Day in Elk Grove. There will be food, a splash park for the kids, and health and wellness resources. I'd go just to see the "old school vs youth" soccer match! (11 am)The Sacramento Children's Museum is bringing back Discovery Play for children with special needs and their siblings and friends. The program is targeted at kids ages birth to 8 and will feature an interactive music session. (12 noon)Join the gala celebrating the bicentennial of Peru. This upscale event will feature live bands, a comedian and amazing fire performances, along with a dinner and dancing. Ticket prices increase at the door, so get yours early.
