Press release from Mountain Brook Schools: July 30, 2021 July 30, 2021 -- Trendon Watford, a 2019 Mountain Brook High School graduate, agreed to a two-way contract with the Portland Trailblazers on Thursday night after the 2021 NBA Draft. With this agreement, Watford is the first Mountain Brook graduate to ever become an NBA athlete. "A lot of people will see this opportunity and not quite understand all of the hard work and all the sacrifices he made to put himself in this position," Bucky McMillan said. "I think this is just the start for him for a long professional career." McMillan coached Watford for four years as a starter at Mountain Brook. In their time together, they led the program to accumulate three straight 7A state championships, a top-five national ranking along with countless other awards and recognitions. McMillan and current varsity boys basketball head coach, Tyler Davis, coached Trendon when he was younger through Mountain Brook camps and AAU programs. "We knew he was special even back in elementary school," Davis said. "This means a great deal, not only for Trendon and his family but also our program and what we have built over the years." A two-way contract allows a player to play for both the NBA team and its G-League affiliate while being under contract with that specific NBA program. Watford begins his journey to the pros August 8-17 when he will be playing in the NBA Summer League for the Trailblazers in Las Vegas. "The best part about Trendon during all of his athletic accomplishments is that he never lost sight of who he is and never forgot those he was close with along the way," McMillan said.
