We have gigs and live recording sessions coming up and require a specific type of guitarist. We pay you $50 per song learned, and $50 per gig. We'd start gigging soon (learn two songs, we'd be ready - we like our performances short and sweet). Most likely: you have a jazz/improv background, but are open minded and enjoy playing any style (and love the challenge of sounding authentic whether you are playing jazz, punk, rock, pop, reggae, hip hop or metal). You have plenty of professional experience, have a good ear for transcribing, and can sketch out a map of a song form and read it during a performance until you memorize it. This is a cover band but: The songs we are covering were free improvisations. Our goal when recording them was to sound as if we had carefully written and rehearsed each of them: emphasising song form and storytelling versus showing off chops. We had a rotating cast of improvisers, and most of them were overqualified jazz professionals with a tendency to try to impress other professionals. Once in a while they would listen to our mission statement and we'd record a masterpiece. The best compliment we ever received was an artist who grew up in East Village during CBGB's prime, who listened to our "greatest hits" several times. He told me: "I am having trouble believing that a lot of these tracks were free improvisations" and I said "thanks". Now we are forming a band to perform the best examples of these songs. Only one or two of them will require almost "note for note" performances, trying to match the original. And we want to include a few more songs where we improve upon the improvised originals.
