Description

The average outdoor/barn cat only brings back 15% of it's kills. Yet hunting vermin is a desirable phenomenon by cats. This is probably why you have one or more. Scientific studies show that after a while they are not effective, they simply get bored of killing the same prey. For every mouse it kills there's 150 more in a 5 acre radius. Cats eventually go searching for other types of prey far away. They have also been known to spread black plague from rats to people. (And yes, black plague didn't die out, it's still found in rodents around the world.)But cats worldwide are an invasive species. They kill native mammals, reptiles, and small birds. They kill around 12 billion birds annually around the world. Which are known as "super predators'' That is a predator that constantly hunts prey that's easy to catch, and can't cause damage. For example, Most cats won't attack a rabbit or mink because they can bite and can injure a cat. Minks have been known to kill cats. Now you just may think that they are stupid animals and there's plenty of them. And you may think it's fun to let your cat "hunt" animals. But disrupting the food chain in any way causes a ripple effect going each direction. Causing a spike in pesty insects that bite, and eat your vegetables and insulation. And takes away from natural predators such as: mink, garter snakes, kestrels, and falcons. There are alternative ways of ridding mice. And trust me. I understand what it's like to have mice in the house and shop. But with time and patience, there's not a problem. At least 60 species have gone extinct all over the world. Worst in: America, China, Russia, Costa Rica, Thailand, most tropical islands, and worst in Australia and New Zealand. There's a cull happening in Australia but it's difficult because of blind, selfish, and angry protestors. And most people just see them as harmless cats, but never think to research or look deeper. Everyone I tell either Doesn't care or gets mad. I know this won't get far since it's just a CL post, but I have to start somewhere.
