Description
The Yellow Cardigan
She was sitting in a small Chinese restaurant, by herself, at a little round table. The waiter set the little black tray on the table that contained her bill. And on top of the bill sat a fortune cookie. She smirked as she picked it up and cracked it open. Inside was the typical, small, triangular paper that we all know too well. It read, “The Yellow Cardigan will bring you true love.” She rolled her eyes and smirked, placed the small paper into her back pocket as she stood up and walked outside into the busy streets, filled with the noise of people chattering as they hurried by, going to their next destination.
As she strolled through the streets, heading home, she smiled at anyone who made even the slightest eye contact, but no one smiled back. She was used to it. This was a big city and everyone was a big city person, they didn’t have time to smile, and they certainly didn’t have time to smile at her.
She loved the large windows, always shiny in the sunlight, hiding such treasures behind their flawless glass. She smiled at her own reflection and it somehow made her feel...not so alone. As she passed by the thrift store that she loved so much she noticed something on the mannequin in the window that wasn’t there yesterday. A beautiful, bright, yellow cardigan, adorned with perfect brass buttons in a neat row down the front. Her smile turned into a sly grin and she slid the fortune out of her back pocket, read it again, and chuckled out loud as she shook her head in disbelief that she was actually about to do this. Several minutes later she walked out of the store, wearing her new, but used, yellow cardigan. She felt lighter and happier. She felt like a new person with a new mission, a new hope in a big city filled with big city people people who didn’t have time to smile...especially at her.
