Description

Jack Salcedo has qualified to become an Eagle Scout at an Eagle Scout Board of Review, held on May 3, 2021. He is the son of Michael and Amparo Salcedo of Livermore and is a member of Troop 939 chartered by the First Presbyterian Church of Livermore. Jack has been active in Scouting since 2010, starting Cub Scouts at the age of 6 and crossed over to Boy Scouts at the end of 5th Grade. As a Boy Scout, Jack continues serving the community, expanding his knowledge, mentoring younger scouts and developing leadership skills. Jack has held many leadership positions in the Troop including Patrol Leader, Librarian, Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader. Jack enjoys the Scouting program which taught him many outdoor and life skills such as emergency preparedness, wilderness first aid, cooking, backpacking, winter survival, canoeing, crab fishing, mountain climbing, rifle shooting, and many more. His training prepared him for a memorable 10-day high adventure backpacking trip to Philmont National Scout Ranch in Northern New Mexico in 2019, backpacking over one hundred miles of terrain. Over the years, Jack has given back to his community by participating in numerous creeks, lake, campground and trail cleanups. He has also volunteered with the Knights of Columbus in collecting food for the needy during the holiday season. For his Eagle Project, Jack was interested in ancient hunting tools and worked with the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) to help enhance their native American education program. This involved building child versions of an ancient hunting tool called an atl-atl as well as 60 four-foot arrows that the children could use. Previously, the program only had two adult sized atl-atls for large school age classroom demonstrations. Jack organized multiple members of his troop to build thirty atl-atls by hand as well as crafted the arrows using actual turkey feathers collected locally. Ranger Dawn Soles from LARPD department remarked, "When Rangers do our programming, we like to make as much as of it as possible hands-on and experiential. The atl-atl's that we had were sized for adult hands and led to much frustration for the students when they tried to use them - and in a couple of cases led to near miss accidents. Because of this, we made the difficult decision to make the atl-atls a demonstration only. With the atl-atls and darts made by Jack Salcedo, we will be able to make the discussion of this tool come to life by allowing the students to actually use the device. I have heard from the rangers that have used them with kids that they have made a huge impact with fun and learning had by all." In his spare time, Jack enjoys all forms of shooting sports, is an avid fan of military history. He recently worked at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. Friends and family who know Jack often describe him as fun, focused and dependable. Currently a student at Granada High School, Jack is interested in pursuing Mechanical Engineering as well as eventually pursuing a military career. Jack is active in tennis, having recently played on the Varsity Tennis Team. Jack will be celebrating his Eagle rank advancement at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony to be held later this month. To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must be active in their troop, provide leadership, earn 21 merit badges including the areas of citizenship, camping, communications, cooking and lifesaving or emergency preparedness as well as demonstrate that they live by the principles of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. They must also plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project benefiting a religious institution, school or community group. Anyone interested in joining any level of Scouting can contact the Twin Valley District Executive, Michael Souza, [email protected]
