ELMHURST, IL — Two Elmhurst aldermen apparently needed little convincing that near accidents are a problem at a local intersection. They recently witnessed close calls themselves while talking to neighbors about the problem. Ward 6 aldermen Michael Honquest and Emily Bastedo are asking the city to investigate the two-way stop at Madison Street and Euclid Avenue, with the stop signs on Euclid. On Monday, the City Council is set to consider a request by the aldermen for a city committee to take up the issue. Honquest wrote the request, with Bastedo signing on. "After reviewing the accident reports, and more importantly witnessing two close call accidents while we stood meeting with the neighborhood, we would like to have a traffic study done for the neighborhood," Honquest wrote. They requested the city also look at Madison's intersections with nearby streets. "Most of these streets have two-way stop signs today, so I am not suggesting that all need to be addressed and made four-way stops," Honquest said in the request, "but I do think we need to be able to communicate that we looked at the entire area and conducted a thorough study to address traffic and safety issues for the area." The aldermen noted that three schools are nearby — Madison Elementary, Bryan Middle and Visitation Catholic School. The stop signs at Euclid had not indicated that it was a two-way stop. The aldermen's letter thanked city staff for addressing that issue with signs alerting drivers. "It was evident standing there many drivers assume a four-way stop," Honquest said in the request.
