UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Metropolitan Opera, American Museum of Natural History, and Symphony Space, and dozens of other Upper West Side organizations have gotten emergency relief grants from the federal government, according to a recent update — however other neighborhood venues may still be waiting. Over $74 million have gone to Upper West Side establishments as part of the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant — a component of last December's stimulus package also known as Save Our Stages. Though the $16 billion program has been a lifeline to many venues that lost out on months of revenue during the pandemic, it was also plagued by an initially slow rollout. As of Monday, just $7.6 billion had been distributed, leaving lots of money left to be claimed, according to a report by the Small Business Administration. On the Upper West Side, four household names received the maximum $10 million grant: the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the American Museum of Natural History. Other major UWS organizations receiving major grants included Symphony Space, New-York Historical Society, and the Philharmonic. The grants given out on the Upper West Side ranged from the maximum $10 million government assistance to $5,066, which went to the Private Theatre Corp — located at 404 Riverside Drive. The 50 neighborhood arts organizations receiving $74 million in funds from the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant outpaced the 21 organizations on the Upper East Side that received nearly $40 million.
