It is time for YOU to get out there and be the change YOU want to see, since you think it is so easy to be a "karaoke flunky".
See how easy it is or isn't to learn ~4 hours worth of songs be they yours or written by others. Or better yet, go ahead and write ~40 songs, and they have to be good ones.
Now you need some equipment. Time to spend some money, you'll need a PA and lights plus backline for whatever instrument you're playing.
And some bandmates.
See how easy it is or isn't to get 3 or more people together who can get along and have similar schedules and aspirations. Now make them learn all of your songs.
Then convince a venue to let you play all of these songs they and their patrons have never heard of.
