His main task was to smuggle out intelligence and build a resistance organization among the prisoners. For almost three years he survived starvation, disease and brutality but accomplished his mission. Pilecki was the first one to send his extraordinary reports revealing bone-chilling atrocities to the Allies before his daring escape from the Hell on Earth. After WWII, he was captured by the communist regime in Poland, then tortured and executed in 1948 as a traitor and a "Western spy."
