dogsitting ethics question

I'm dogsitting for a neighbor and his dog is probably in a state to be put down. His back legs barely hold him up. He urinates on himself because he can't stand up to pee sometimes. I came over this morning to feed and water and brush him, and he had pooped on his mat and was lying on the poop. I can see his ribs. Before my neighbor left on his trip, I asked him, what happens if the dog dies on my watch? The dog seemed in a state to be sent over the rainbow bridge. The owner said one family member was for putting the dog down, and the other family member was against it. I did not ask for anyone's reasons why yes or no. He's more interested in pets and scritches than eating when I visit. I was scratching his chest and he literally fell over because he was so relaxed and his back legs hardly work anymore. His face looks so happy and mournful at the same time. I just had to get this off my mind. We really really do not deserve the love of these creatures.
