NEW YORK CITY, NY — Back-to-school planning has already begun for New York City public schools, with calendars available to help parents prepare for the first day. The first day of school for all K-12 NYC Department of Education public schools is Sept. 13. Heading into the upcoming school year, some dates are subject to change as the coronavirus pandemic nears its year-and-a-half point. A mix of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning is still possible for NYC DOE schools. Vaccinations aren't mandatory for students, but the city is strongly encouraging them for those who are eligible. Earlier this week, Mayor Bill de Blasio encouraged parents to get their children vaccinated. "Number one thing you can do to get your kids ready for school – it's not going and buying a backpack, or pens or paper, or any of that stuff – it's getting your kid vaccinated if they're not yet vaccinated and they're eligible," de Blasio said. The mayor also said recently that he expects "that everyone will be wearing a mask." Teachers in public schools are required either to get the vaccine or take a COVID-19 test weekly. Here is the list of dates to know for this school year: New York City public schools First Day: September 13 Thanksgiving Recess: Nov. 25-26 Winter Recess: December 24-31 Midwinter Recess: February 21-25 Spring Recess: April 15-22 Last Day: June 27
