Description
EAST HAVEN, CT - The call came in just before sunrise on Sunday.
East Haven firefighters were summoned to 677 Main St., location of My Country Store, at 5:30 a.m. and found a car "buried deep" into the building, fire chief Matt Marcarelli told Patch. He said that the vehicle passed through the front side of the store, causing "significant cosmetic but not structural damage to the building."
Unoccupied when firefighters got there, he said that the driver had fled the scene.
East Haven police responded to investigate.
Police Capt. Joseph M. Murgo told Patch that the driver, who was alleged to have been intoxicated, showed up later in the day at police headquarters to claim responsibility. Murgo said a warrant for his arrest is pending.
Marcarelli said the fire marshal and building inspector were notified and checked the building for structural integrity.
The store owners were not in the building at the time and no injuries were reported, Marcarelli said.
