PITTSBURGH, PA — If you plan on being in a Pittsburgh Public Schools building this year, prepare to don a mask. District directors on Thursday unanimously adopted a COVID-19 school safety plan for 2021-22 year that will require students, teachers, staff and visitors to be masked while in any school.
Students participating in sports will not have to wear masks if playing outdoors.
The safety plan aligns with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations issued Tuesday that calls for indoor masks for anyone in a school building regardless of vaccination status.
In addition to the mask requirement, the new policy will attempt to allow for 3 feet social distancing between students and 6 feet between adults in classrooms - where feasible. Safety signage will continue to be posted in buildings, and schools will be cleaned in the evenings.
The Pittsburgh Public School District is the largest of 43 school districts in Allegheny County and second largest in Pennsylvania, with approximately 25,000 students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12.
The first day for students in grades 1-8, 9 and 12 is Aug. 25. Grades 10 and 11 will start Aug. 25 and kindergarten begins Aug. 30.
