Description
Learn to identify and use our local wild plants at Magnuson Park in Seattle! In this two hour plant walk through Seattle's Magnuson Park, you will learn about how to identify, harvest and use several wild plants. We will walk through the wetland (Restored and not restored), tasting and touching our way through some of our most abundant and useful edible and medicinal plants. Some of the plants we'll learn about are: english hawthorn, black hawthorn, red alder, cattail, wild fennel, wild rose, poison hemlock, scotch broom, feral apples, plantain, saint john's wort, and wild carrot. During class, we will also discuss stewardship and sustainability, which are two important subjects in the world of foraging. Come with curiosity and questions! This class is perfect for those wanting to ID plants on their hikes, to connect with nature more deeply, to start foraging, to study medicinal herbs or to bring wild plants into their garden. Participants will leave feeling more connected to the plant world around them, ready to go on hikes and begin to identify the plants around them. Please note: Harvesting is not allowed in Seattle Parks, and we will not be harvesting during the walk. We make take small samples of some plants to help with learning ID. This walk is open to any experience level. No prior knowledge of plants needed! MEETING LOCATION: We'll be meeting at the northeast corner of the "Park and Ride: Magnuson Frog Pond". Its on the south side of the park. Please arrive on time to avoid the group leaving the parking lot without you. Pin on google: https://goo.gl/maps/YWRCYQLiyH4wFtxd6 Please bring: - a notebook - camera (cell phone is fine) - weather appropriate clothing (we walk, rain or shine!) - snacks and water - comfortable walking shoes COVID Safety: - masks are required to wear in close proximity with other folks in the class if you are unvaccinated. Vaccinated folks may choose if they wear a mask or not. - This policy may change depending on the state mandate, and current trends with the delta variant. I'll send an email if that's the case. ABOUT THE TEACHER: This class will be taught by me: Natalie Hammerquist. I was born and raised in the Seattle area, and have been foraging in the pacific northwest for 13 years. Herbalism is the primary lens from which I come to plants, but I also forage wild edibles, tend a garden, and make art from foraged things. My training is in field plant taxonomy and western folk herbalism. I have been teaching full time about herbalism and foraging for 4 years at my school, The Adiantum School of Plant Medicine. My students would agree that I am a quirky and authentic educator who values radical self acceptance, reciprocity in nature, and latin names for things. Ethics and stewardship are always at the root of my teaching. My inner nerd is excited to be acquainted with your inner nerd!
