CAMBRIDGE, MA — 12 firefighters have been released from the hospital after suffering chemical burns while responding to a hazmat incident in Cambridge early Wednesday morning. Firefighters say they responded to a report of smoke coming from a vacant apartment on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge around 12:50 a.m. When they got to the scene, they started using water to put out the flames, before realizing it was a chemical fire, says Cambridge Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Cahill. Parts of Massachusetts Avenue and Brookline Street were closed while crews worked on the scene, but they have since been reopened. Investigators are looking into what caused the leak in the first place and why the chemicals were in the unoccupied apartment. Four people have been displaced as a result of the hazmat incident.
