NORWALK — A major renovation project has been proposed for the Stew Leonard's flagship store in Norwalk. Officials for the massive dairy and grocery store has filed plans with municipal officials for the Westport Avenue location. Plans were submitted this month. According to the plans, the two-story expansion would eliminate the outdoor tent and seasonal sales area that has been a marquee at the building's entrance for a number of years. A new farmers market and garden center measuring 10,500 square feet are part of the proposal. In all, $15 million with of upgrades are planned, according to the filings. A new check-out area is also among them, according to store officials. The proposal marks the latest evolution for the store that began in the late 1960s as a small dairy store. Residents of Fairfield County flocked to the store for bargains on dairy products and juice. Stew's had just seven employees in 1969 and now boasts annual sales of nearly $500 million and more than 2,500 staff members. In addition to the headquarters store in Norwalk, Stew's has Connecticut stores in Danbury and Newington and in New York has outlets in Yonkers, Farmingdale, and East Meadow. It also has a store in Paramus, N.J. Here is a peek at architectural renderings: Plans for Stew Leonard's renovations in Norwalk. (Stew Leonard's)Plans for Stew Leonard's renovations in Norwalk.
