POINT PLEASANT, NJ – With Ocean County being one of the seven New Jersey counties showing a substantial increase in COVID-19 transmission rate, according to the CDC, along with the CDC's recommendation on Tuesday that vaccinated people who are in areas at high risk for the coronavirus should wear masks when indoors. Despite the recent reports from the CDC, Gov. Phil Murphy is still standing pat on having all New Jersey schools return to a full school schedule while saying that any decision on wearing masks in schools should be left up to "local realities." According to new Point Pleasant Borough superintendent of schools Adam Angelozzi, the school district is set on returning to a full five-day-a-week schedule. It will consider all input from both state and federal officials along with the community as they work on the plan for this upcoming year. "At this time, Point Pleasant Borough School District is committed to fully opening schools for in-person instruction to start the 2021-2022 school year," Angelozzo said. "In addition, we will continue to evaluate guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey Department of Health, the Ocean County Health Department, and community stakeholders as we develop plans for opening schools in September." The Point Pleasant School District decided to make mask-wearing in schools voluntary back in June. "I wanted to inform you that effective tomorrow, Wednesday, June 9th, through the remainder of the school year, the district has determined it is optional for students and staff to wear a mask in school, regardless of the temperature," then-Superintendent Vincent Smith said in a letter posted on the district's website.
