AUSTIN, TX — Seven candidates have made the cut to the final round in becoming the next chief of the Austin Police Department, city officials said Monday. The finalists include Austin Interim Police Chief Joe Chacon, along with six other candidates who have police chief or assistant chief experience. Four of the candidates are women and five are people of color. Thirty-nine others were eliminated through an initial screening of applications, city officials said. Officials said interviews are expected to start soon, and City Manager Spencer Cronk says he hopes to announce the next chief before the end of August. His pick will require the approval of the City Council. The seven candidates include: Joseph Chacon, who has been with the department for more than 20 years and has been serving as interim chief since March; Anne Kirkpatrick, who started her policing career in 1982 and has been chief in Oakland and three cities in Washington state, including Spokane;Avery L. Moore, a 30-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, Moore became assistant chief in 2017 and was promoted to deputy chief in 2019;Gordon Ramsay, who has been a police chief for 15 years, the last five in Wichita, the largest city in Kansas with almost 400,000 residents;Emada E. Tingirides, who has been with the Los Angeles Police Department since 1995 and was promoted to deputy chief in August 2020.
