PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield School District 202's new elementary school, Wallin Oaks, is opening for the upcoming school year Aug. 18. To celebrate, the ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on the grounds at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3. A group of new Wallin Oaks students, along with school and district administrators, Board of Education members and guests, were invited to help cut the ribbon next Tuesday. Afterward, guests will be able to tour the new school from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wallin Oaks, located at 15410 S. Wallin Drive behind Ira Jones Middle School, is the district's 18th elementary school. Officials approved plans to build the school for $25 million, and, according to a news release, the district is leasing the building from the bank for $2.5 million for 10 years, after which the district will own Wallin Oaks. "District 202 will not have to raise tax rates to pay for the new building," officials said in a news release. "However, individual tax bills may increase based on individual property values, but the district's tax rate will not increase because of this project." The school was built as part of the district's plan to offer full-day kindergarten to interested parents and students, since Illinois doesn't require students to attend kindergarten. Although enrollment is ongoing this summer, preliminary numbers show more than 1,500 students want full-day kindergarten, according to district officials. Officials said Wallin Oaks will also house the district's half-day kindergarten program, which school districts are required to provide if full-day programs are also available.
