ELMHURST, IL — The Elmhurst School District 205 board is set to vote Wednesday night on a resolution that would largely support the new superintendent's plan for handling the pandemic. Under the resolution, Superintendent Keisha Campbell could change the plan later to conform with requirements from the state, the Illinois High School Association and local health agencies. If she does so, she must consult with board President Kara Caforio and then promptly report to the board, which may later affirm or reject the changes in a public meeting. Two weeks ago, Campbell presented a plan that would make masks optional for everyone, while encouraging the unvaccinated to wear them. Board members said their biggest issue with the plan was quarantines. They noted the district quarantined students more than 5,200 times last school year because they had close contact with those testing positive for the coronavirus. Of those quarantined, they said, only 13 ended up testing positive. Earlier this month, residents on both sides of the mask debate spoke at a board meeting.
