HUNTERSVILLE, NC — A Huntersville man took a quick trip to jail Tuesday when he attempted to enter the Mecklenburg County Courthouse with a submachine gun pistol and more than two dozen rounds of ammunition, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said. Shaun Donte Anthony, 35, was arrested around 8:30 a.m. July 27 when the weapon and 27 rounds concealed in his book bag were spotted during an X-ray scan as he attempted to enter the building. "One of the responsibilities of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is to ensure the safety of the visiting public and employees who utilize the Mecklenburg County Courthouse," Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement. "I am very proud of the attentiveness and alert response demonstrated by our deputies today." Anthony told deputies he was at the courthouse accompanying his wife, who was appearing due to a ticket. He was arrested for possession of a deadly weapon on a state property/courthouse and was escorted across the street to arrest processing at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, MCSO said.
