Live in caregiver for disabled man needed
Jobs
Johnson City TN
Description
We are searching for a caregiver for my brother, Daniel. He is 36 years old, and fourteen years ago, he suffered a spinal cord injury which resulted in him being mostly paralyzed and in a wheelchair. He attended Sullivan East High School and was a good student and athlete. He is still living his life to the best of his ability, though. He lives in a separate apartment in my mother's home (in Johnson City, TN), and has 24/7 caregivers, one primary live-in caregiver, and one or more back-up caregivers. Through a program called “Choices”, the state pays a decent salary to the caregivers. Now we need some new caregivers. Qualifications: no prior medical experience is required. You do not have to be a nurse or a nursing assistant, although that experience would be helpful. CPR/First Aid certification will be required before you start, but if you are interested in the job, you can fill out an application and then work on getting that. You will be required to pass a background check. Duties: Duties include getting Daniel out of bed and into the wheelchair, and at night, putting him back in bed. Duties also include showering and shaving him, dressing him, stretching and massaging him, some meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and driving him to appointments. There are some medical tasks such as dispensing medications, emptying a catheter bag, and bowel program. You would be taught how to do these tasks. This job does require you to be in good physical condition - Daniel is not small, and things like getting him dressed, stretching and massaging him, and getting him in and out of bed require a lot of physical stamina. A lot of this is technique (you don't necessarily have to be a large, super strong person), but you do need to have a certain amount of physical stamina. Pay: The pay for back-up caregivers is 134.95 per 24-hour day. Schedule will be flexible, but ideally, you would work at least one and no more than two days per week. The primary caregiver works all the rest of the time and lodging is included. The pay for the primary caregiver is 104.96 per day, which comes out to an annual salary of $27,000 to $32,000 (with free rent!), depending on whether you work 5 or 6 days per week. This salary is set by the government program that pays for his care, and is NOT negotiable. Of course, I am biased, but Daniel is intelligent, sweet, considerate, forgiving, and very appreciative of any services or kindnesses bestowed on him. You will love him! The work is not easy, but you will be performing a labor of love and compassion. If you are interested, please send an email with your resume and summary of why you are interested in this job.
