Learn more about the abolitionist who led a raid to end slavery in the United States and the monument to recognize him here in Akron. The Summit County Historical Society and Akron Zoo will host a free hike up to the John Brown on Saturday, August 14th at 9 a.m. Some call him a madman, others a martyr. Dave Lieberth, Society Director Emeritus, and Leianne Neff Heppner, Society president & CEO, will share the history of the monument and the life of John Brown. The event will occur rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and wear hiking shoes as there is an incline and the path is uneven at times. Questions? Call the Society office at 330.535.1120. Founded in 1924, the mission of Summit County Historical Society, a 501(c)3 corporation, is to preserve and interpret the history of Summit County and Akron, and to educate regional communities about the people and events that have shaped our rich history.
