Join sixth-generation book artisan Maria Giannini at the Virginia Center for the Book Marbling Demonstration & WorkshopSunday October 10, 2021 (2:00 - 5:00 PM)Virginia Center for the BookMaria Giannini will hold a paper marbelizing demo and workshop (no fee but reservation is required).Materials are provided, each participant will make one marbelized sheet. (The workshop will be limited to 15 participants.) With probable origins in Japan or Persia, marbled paper evolved from a long tradition of hand-decorated paper in Europe, which began in the 16th century. The Giannini family continues to make marbled paper according to this time-honored method. Note: While there is no charge, advance reservations are required for this event! ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ Maria is heir to the culture of making and the artisan tradition that has characterized the Giannini family for nearly two centuries, she looks to the contemporary and the future of the company, carrying on a constant dialogue between tradition and innovation. Founded in 1856 the artisan workshop Giulio Giannini e Figlio continues a tradition spanning six generations of family members. Known worldwide for its high-quality hand-tooled leather book bindings, the Giannini family also produces items such as marbleized paper, decorated paper printed with traditional folk designs, greeting cards, and a variety of objects made to order. COVID Vaccination & Masking Policy: It is the Virginia Center for the Book’s expectation that all workshop and presentation attendees will be vaccinated. Our instructors are vaccinated and may opt to conduct the sessions while unmasked, though any participant may mask or unmask as they feel comfortable. Should public health guidelines change and new norms be applicable, we reserve the right to revisit the expectations in the interest of participant health and safety.
