Description

Support Herbicide-Free Campus by attending this engaging fundraiser exploring the intersections of toxins, human health, and soil health. Note: This event is a fundraiser for Herbicide-Free Campus, an organization fiscally sponsored by the Earth Island Institute, a 501(c)3 organization. We encourage you to pay what you can to attend, as every dollar will contribute to our organization’s mission to rid schools of toxic herbicides. We will not turn anyone away for lack of funds. To receive a complimentary ticket, just email us at [email protected]. Both Herbicide-Free Campus and Manny's are monitoring the extent of the Delta variant and for that reason, proof of vaccination is required upon arrival at the event. Although this event will occur in person, there will also be a zoom link ticket for those who would like to tune in digitally from the comfort of their home. ABOUT THE EVENT: Join Herbicide-Free Campus for a fascinating evening of conversation and learning! We will explore the impacts of pesticides on both people and the planet with perspectives from a diverse panel of experts bringing academic, professional, and lived experiences to share. Are you aware that the sprawling green lawns covering campuses and neighborhoods across America are typically maintained with toxic chemicals? These toxins impact the humans that maintain and enjoy green spaces, the soil beneath the surface, and the wildlife and pollinators that call them home. Join the movement to create safer and more sustainable spaces for all and learn about how you can become an advocate for organic landcare in your school and your community. Our panelists include: Giselle Lazaro, COSECHA Youth Researcher: Giselle Lazaro is an incoming senior at UC Davis with a double major in Political Science and Chicana/o Studies and a minor in English from Salinas, CA. During high school, Giselle worked on the COSECHA Study as a research assistant for UC Berkeley and La Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas. Since then, she has continued to work on two other research projects. Giselle hopes to go on and get her masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley after her undergraduate degree and her passions include research, education, painting and watching youtube! Kendra Klein, Ph.D., Senior Staff Scientist at Friends of the Earth: Kendra Klein, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at Friends of the Earth’s Food & Agriculture program. She leads research and market campaigns on pesticides, environmental health, organic and regenerative agriculture. Prior to joining FOE, she coordinated the California Healthy Food in Health Care campaign for Health Care Without Harm and worked on toxics and public health at Breast Cancer Action. Kendra has apprenticed on organic farms, is a Switzer Environmental Fellow and has written for The Guardian, The Nation, Gastronomica, Civil Eats, Food Tank, and EcoWatch. She holds a BA from Miami University of Ohio and a PhD in Environmental Science, Policy & Management from UC Berkeley. Daphne Miller, M.D., Family Physician at LifeLong Medical Care and author of Farmacology: Total Health from the Ground Up: Daphne Miller, M.D., is a practicing family physician with expertise in how environmental health, personal health, and food systems connect. She is also a clinical professor in the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine, curriculum director for integrative medicine and research at the LifeLong Medical Care Family Medicine Residency in Richmond, Calif., the founder of Health from the Soil Up, an initiative that harnesses medical resources to transform the food system and promote environmental justice, and author of Farmacolgy: Total Health from the Ground Up. Over the past two decades, Dr. Miller has studied the connections among health, culture, and agriculture, with the goal of building a healthier and more resilient food system from the soil up. Moderated by Mackenzie Feldman, Founder and Executive Director of Herbicide-Free Campus. Manny’s is a community-focused meeting and learning place in the heart of San Francisco. It is also a non-profit restaurant, serving meals by Farming Hope, a garden-to-table job training nonprofit. They offer paid, empowering transitional employment in our garden and kitchen with formerly incarcerated or unhoused neighbors! Farming Hope will be selling food if you want to purchase dinner when you arrive.
