Kung FuAncient masters practised Kung Fu not just for self-defense, but as a way to benefit themselves on a physical, mental and spiritual level. In times of hardship, such as the economic state we are now facing, this knowledge is imperative. Our Kung Fu helps us cope with our modern fast paced lives that can so often lead to stress, anxiety and illness. The legend of the Shaolin Temple and its Shaolin Kung Fu monks began around 540 CE, when the Indian monk Damo travelled to China to see the emperor. Damo introduced to the Shaolin monks eighteen movements derived from traditional Indian Yoga. This was designed to increase their physical and mental strength as well as the flow of chi (life energy). It was these eighteen movements that would become Kung Fu as we know it today, after being perfected and expanded for nearly 2,000 years. When we look at the story of Shaolin, we see the benefits that Kung Fu was originally intended to give us. The Shaolin monks began practicing Kung Fu not only for self-defense, but as a way to improve their health and spirituality. Kung Fu has been constantly perfected and built upon over the centuries, creating the vast array of styles and variations that we know today. The philosophy behind Kung Fu is the core of our teachings. Through our Kung Fu training, we learn about Respect, Tolerance, Perseverance, Dignity, Humility and Honor among other values. 7 Star Praying MantisThe system that we practice is from Northern Shaolin Seven Star Praying Mantis , handed down from our late Grandmaster Chiu Leun. Kung Fu (pronounced Gung Fu) is a skill derived through hard work and time in the war arts. Gung Fu Wushu is the most correct term. Although Kung Fu has changed over time and often becomes more focused on the “martial” side of things, the core message and philosophy remains the same as what Damo taught the Shaolin monks nearly 2,000 years ago Our CurriculumOur system combines 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Wrestling. Through mastering the different styles we achieve balance in our training – a balance between power and speed, between soft and hard, between ferocity and calmness. Understanding and balancing the different styles helps us with changing and adapting in a fight. This balance is carried forth into our daily lives, helping us to create perfect harmony within ourselves and between ourselves and others in our lives. Kung Fu training is designed to not only help us with our self-defense, but to build health, fitness, focus, discipline and confidence. These wisdoms help us be successful in our training and in everything that we do in life. It is important to keep up with our Kung Fu training so we can continue to grow in our daily lives, expanding physical fitness, emotional intelligence, relieving stress, and maintaining good health.
