Description

Sax In The City performs a lively mix of Classical, Jazz, Folk and World Music that balances musical tradition with refreshing innovation. Sax in the City draws on an array of cultures and musical forms to create a unique and diversified repertoire. Performances include a lively mix of Classical, Jazz, Folk and World Music that balances musical tradition with refreshing innovation. Active advocates of contemporary music, Sax in the City has introduced audiences to new works by today’s leading composers, including Steve Cohen and Will Gregory, as well as inventive arrangements for saxophone quartet by Scott Joplin and George Gershwin. With a sound that is both warm and transparent, Soprano saxophonist Frederic Davis uses an instrument from the early 1920's with a curved bell, rather than the standard clarinet-shaped contemporary saxophone. The curve, says Davis, results in a dark and lyrical sound that takes on a life of its own. The musicians of the quartet—Frederic Davis, soprano; Jack Pettit, alto; Ryan Westberry, tenor; Stan Zuber, baritone—represent a wide swath of experience in classical, jazz and pop. Individually, they have played with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, North Charleston Pops Orchestra, Summerville Orchestra, Joe Clark Big Band, Louisville Saxophone Institute and New York Chamber Saxophones. Coming together as Sax in the City, they are actively involved in arts education and participating in outreach concerts in the community and schools. Mr. Pettit is co-director of The Great Gatsby Orchestra and Dr. Westberry is the conductor of the Saint James Wind Ensemble. Mr. Zuber is director of the Charleston Concert Jazz Band.
