Description

SUDBURY, MA — A mosquito spraying truck will visit several Sudbury neighborhoods Wednesday evening to apply a pesticide that targets adult mosquitoes. The truck will begin spraying around dusk and will be in neighborhoods near Howell Road, Austin Road, Barton Drive, Oakwood Avenue, Reeves Street, Pratt's Mill Road and Evergreen Road, according to an East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project advisory. The truck will apply Zenivex E4, which kills adult mosquitoes, black flies and midges or gnats, according to the manufacturer. The active ingredient is etofenprox, which can cause skin irritation. Officials recommend residents avoid the trucks during spraying, but the pesticide will be applied in a relatively low dose of about one ounce per acre. Health officials are concerned that higher rain amounts this summer could contribute to larger mosquito populations, and that means the possibility of more West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis cases. Sudbury is at "low" risk of both West Nile and EEE as of this week, although 15 mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile statewide so far this summer, according to the state Department of Public Health. There have been no positive EEE samples so far.
