Brookfield Waste Contract Nears End; City Seeks Potential Vendors

BROOKFIELD, WI — The City of Brookfield will consider a new garbage contract in Tuesday's Common Council closed session. The city's contract with Waste Management will end this year, public works Director Tom Grisa told Patch. Council members will discuss Tuesday whether they want to continue the drive-up service or curbside pickup, either through Waste Management or another vendor. The meeting will be a closed session so council members can discuss proposed fees by the different vendors, Grisa said. Some council members are concerned about the meeting being a closed session. "When it comes to closed session, I don't want the city to lose its competitive advantage when it comes to how much it's willing to pay for a given service," Alderman Mike Hallquist told Patch. "While I believe the financial details should be discussed in closed session, I think it's important to discuss what services are best for the city during open session," he added. "This is a service virtually every resident uses, so the deliberation and decision should be transparent." Council members can decide whether or not to open the session, City Clerk Kelly Michaels told Patch. Only the garbage contract discussion will be held in closed session, according to the meeting agenda. Waste Management bought Advanced Disposal in 2020, according to a waste management company statement.
