Here are the top five stories today in Laurel: Thomas Hong of Laurel competed in the Olympics Games 2008 as a short-track speed skater. His intent was to be in a position to go to the 2022 Olympic Games. COVID stopped his plans. Hong returned home to finish his degree at the University of Maryland. His new dream is to get into medical school. (Washingtonian) The 2021 Great Lakes League baseball season ended with a home win over the Sandusky Ice Haulers at Heise Park. Galion defeated Sandusky 10-9 in the opening game of the season on June 4. Jack Lawrence, a senior at Frostburg State University who hails from Laurel, fueled the Galion attack. (Galion Inquirer) The Hogan Administration announced nearly $1 million in grant money for 30 organizations and law enforcement agencies to assist with pedestrian and bicycle safety on roadways. Gov. Larry Hogan said that "these grants will provide organizations and law enforcement agencies with the resources and funding they need to protect our most vulnerable travelers." (CBS Baltimore)Prince George's County Public Schools will require that students, teachers and staff wear masks this fall. The school system said it is continuing its mask guidance that was in effect last school year. (WTOP)Health officials in Prince George's County continue to run mobile clinics offering free COVID-19 vaccines to students ages 12 and up. From July 26 to July 30, eligible students can receive vaccines free of charge from a mobile clinic hosted at a different public high school each day.
