Michigan Surpasses 900,000 Coronavirus Cases, Nears 20,000 Deaths

LANSING, MI — More than 900,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Michigan as of Tuesday, as the state closes in on 20,000 COVID-19 deaths, according to the latest data provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The state reported 1,762 new coronavirus cases Tuesday — its first virus update since Friday and encompassing the past four days — increasing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Michigan to 901,683. Michigan also added 19 COVID-19 deaths, growing the state's coronavirus death toll to 19,902. The updated figures come in the wake of reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to issue new guidance Tuesday calling for vaccinated Americans to resume mask-wearing indoors in certain circumstances. See More: CDC To Recommend Mask-Wearing Among Vaccinated: Report The new guidelines are a reversal from previous guidance issued in May that said Americans vaccinated against the coronavirus did not have to wear masks in most indoor settings and are prompted by a rising number of cases in dozens of U.S. states. The guidance is expected to target certain areas of the country where COVID-19 cases are soaring and vaccination rates are low, the New York Times reported. Such guidelines have not been implemented in Michigan, but Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday was reportedly seen at an event sporting a mask. When asked about it, she said she was told by one of the state's leading health officials to wear it when inside spaces with groups of people.
